The initial plan was to serve
chicken dinners, but burgers have
become Floyd’s top seller. One
can’t go wrong with the Plain
Jane or Double Double, which
feature charbroiled ground chuck
beef on a toasted bun with your
choice of toppings. There are more
adventurous offerings too, such
as the Chili Cheese, BBQ Bacon
and Wake-N-Bacon burgers, as
well as rotating specials like the
Guacamole Bacon Burger.
They also serve chicken sandwiches
and an array of Southern
specialties, such as greens, chili
and red beans and rice. Daily
specials, with the most popular
being chicken and dumplings on
Wednesday, are a hit as well.

While it’s been a rewarding experience running the business, it hasn’t
been without its challenges.
Dallas took over operations in February. Within weeks, the COVID-19
pandemic swept across the nation, presenting several unprecedented

challenges.
Trips to the grocery store
became filled with anxiety, while
meat prices rose and shortages of
key items such as rice and beans
became more prevalent.
“It was definitely nerve-wracking
at first,” Dallas said. “It was a
lot to take in … and then all this
COVID stuff started happening. I
just had to take it day-by-day and
face it head on.”
Fortunately for Dallas, the cooking
side of things has been a fairly
seamless transition.
“Thankfully my dad had already
taught me everything I needed to
know, just learning all the recipes
and how to cook the dumplings,”
he added. “I grew up loving cooking
and watching Food Network
with him, and almost everything
he knows, I know.
“He hasn’t taught me all of his
tricks, but it’s definitely been a lot
easier than I thought it would be.”
Floyd’s on 14th, located just off Sam Houston Avenue at 1221 14th

placed by calling (936) 438-3722, but there are also several tables and
areas to sit on the premises.

And I want to win for my client.”
