Hello Huntsville,
There’s certainly no denying that 2020 will go down as one of the strangest
years in our collective memory. Community events that we look forward to
every year have been canceled or rescheduled. Our day planners have become
paperweights and our days have blurred together. We’ve had to be creative in ways we
never imagined and as stress has mounted, many of us have struggled to be the best
versions of ourselves.
Hopefully, we’ll all come out of this with love for one another, and when we look back
on these times, we’ll be able to find both humor and lessons.
Though events come and go, the hard-working, dedicated people of our community
remain a constant source of encouragement, and that’s why we are focusing on them in
this issue of Huntsville Living.
We’ll introduce you to Vicki McKenzie, whose passion for helping others is something
we should all aspire to emulate. But, the 2020 Citizen of the Year is only a small portion
of the Walker County residents that are spotlighted in the succeeding pages.
We’ll introduce you to people like Ravon Justice, whose success with the Sam
Houston State women’s basketball team is astonishing. You’ll meet Dr. Darol Hail, who
has turned a small school district in New Waverly into a winner and you’ll learn the story
of Maddie Riley, whose passion for agriculture led to her becoming a 4-H district chairman.
With many of us spending more time at home, this issue will also teach you how to
make some classic drink cocktails.
Another special to this edition of Huntsville Living is a Q&A with the 14th president of
Sam Houston State University, Dr. Alisa White.
Keep on truckin’, Huntsville, and hopefully this time next year, we’ll all be able to look
back on this time and say it strengthened us.
