Jimmy Spivey
Jimmy Spivey grew up in Huntsville in a typical family of 23 children . His parents owned a washateria / laundromat which was managed by his mother . His father was a truck driver and construction worker , who worked out of town during the weekdays .
Though his family was large , his mother was a very organized “ manager ” of the home . She assigned “ chores ” for each of the children and placed the chores on a “ list ,” which she updated each day . Each child old enough to have a job outside of the home was assigned a utility bill to pay . His father pastored two churches . They all attended church , every Sunday without fail . His parents had an enormous impact on his life growing up .
Spivey ’ s father was a very hard-working man . His favorite quote was , “ If the sun is shining , a man ought to be out working .” As mentioned , his mother was organized and efficient in the way she guided her children in each of their responsibilities . Spivey said they were taught to “ work for what we obtain and appreciate all that we have .” In their household it was understood that each child would get out of life what they put into it ; “ that hard work and persistence will carry you far .”
His mother passed away at the early age of 49 , when Spivey was 19 years old .
“ She once told me that I would one day have to take care of and provide for my many siblings . She routinely ‘ coached ’ me for the future ,” Spivey said . “ I will never forget her telling me , in her words , as a teenager to ‘ remember everybody can ’ t handle prosperity .’”
His father and two brothers owned and managed Spivey Construction during their lifetime . He acquired many skills by working alongside them and his seven brothers , including learning how to pour concrete . Upon graduating from high school , Spivey ’ s career goal was to create and manage his own company .
A few years later Spivey started his business , J & M Contracting Company .
“ Supervising the day-to-day responsibilities of my company , includes managing employees , reading , and interpreting blueprints , ordering material for job sites , bid on new jobs , and overseeing the long-term goals for my company ,” Spivey said .
He also manages his music production company , J Spivey Productions . The company organizes “ Gigantic Gospel Concerts ” several times throughout the year .
“ I ’ m an outdoorsman and love my antique cars ,” Spivey said about his relaxation time .
His philosophy on life is to work hard , be persistent , love God , love your family , help others ( as you have the means to do so ), and appreciate all that God has blessed you with .
