He was active in his local church , where he worked with the youth . His pursuit of education continued at Alvin Community College , University of Houston and Lamar University for his masters .
Trevino ’ s parents and maternal great-grandfather Ben Gonzales influenced his life . He also learned many life lessons from his numerous mentors , coaches , colleagues and considers himself a life long learner who treasures and internalizes the wisdom of others .
Principal Trevino ’ s typical day could not be summarize in a few sentences . He manages a small city of almost 2,000 students , teachers , staff and volunteers . He begins his day checking emails , checking cameras , visiting with staff and students , check on some specific students that need that in-person contact , follow up with some staff members , checking on classrooms inside and outside of the building to see how things are going , one or more meetings with staff members regarding some ideas , concerns , or just a time to get some things off their chest .
Next , he calls parents or visits with parents face to face regarding some ideas , concerns , or just to vent ; work with the administrative team or counselors on some things that they need to address or discuss the great things that have occurred during the day ; check on the special needs students to ensure that they are getting what they need and are having a great day - and sometimes he needs a pick-me-up from them ; send message to a colleague , friend , church member , or student just to let them know he was checking on them ; reviewing student attendance ; visiting with some seniors that have been struggling ; and visiting with some coaches or sponsors of these students to figure out another way to motivate them to conquer another day .
All throughout the day Trevino is reviewing purchase orders for the campus and purchase orders for student activities . He ends the day usually sending emails to students , parents , seniors , and staff members about events that have occurred , will occur , or answering questions about the campus .
This “ Difference Maker ” has a life philosophy to love everyone and to be a light to others , as taught in God ’ s teachings . Trevino ’ s spiritual strength enable him to handle the many daily demands for his attention and input .
Trevino ’ s biggest challenges are state changes that are mandated but may or may not be funded . There transitive directives require continuous adjustment and learning . “ Most days he wants to grow wings to have quicker access to all the demands of his day ,” said Trevino .
When Trevino is able to take time off , he travels with his family , going on cruises , and eating Italian food . Italy is his favorite county for their culture and history but for now he is happy in “ Home Sweet Huntsville .”
