several members transferring out of the program it will be a completely different front five for the Kats .
Sam Houston ’ s rebuild will also be on the defensive side as well . The Kats will return the WAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year in linebacker Markel Perry . Perry will be one of three returning starters for the Kats . Linebacker Trevor Williams is another name Bearkat fans should be on the lookout for this season . Williams was third on the team in tackles last season with Zyon and Tristan McCollum being first and second , respectively .
Sam Houston ’ s defense will also gain a former five-star recruit , BJ Foster , from the University of Texas .
Foster ’ s mother , Yolanda Royston , is a former Bearkat and is in Sam Houston ’ s Hall of Honor for her efforts on the volleyball court . Foster is somebody that will make an immediate impact on this squad .
On the defensive line , Jevon Leon saw some snaps last season but behind a very experienced defensive line . Now Leon should make the jump to an everyday starter after totaling 12 tackles and one and a half sacks last season .
As for the remaining seven spots , the Bearkats will have plenty to work out and get on track .
Sam Houston will face the ultimate test on Sept . 3 when they head an hour west to College Station . The Bearkats will face the No . 6 Texas A & M Aggies to kickoff the season . The game is slated to start at 11 a . m . at Kyle Field .
