It's no secret that stoneflies can be the bread and butter of Adirondack trout streams during the warmer months. Surpringly however, few people fish them outside of the summer time and these bugs are present year round. It's amusing at times to show people large flies in the fly shop and see their reactions to the beastly creations.

Plain and simple....big stonefly patterns fish very well in the Adirondacks and everybody should be fishing them more often. Speaking for myself, when I am nymphing there is almost always a stonefly somewhere in my multi-fly rigs.

The pattern that you will find on the next few pages is the culmination of a lot of tinkering. I have been working on this fly, making adjustments, for three seasons and finally called it finished during the 2013 season.

The idea behind the "AA Stone" is the desire for a high floating, highly visible pattern that will float all day and effectively imitate all three common colors of stoneflies. I also wanted a fly that would fish well for backcountry Brook trout which love big dark patterns.
