Humans of SLA 0 | Page 4

At Science Leadership Academy, seniors create, implement and complete projects called capstones. I knew I wanted to undertake a project

that would allow me to interact with people that I may not know. This way I would learn about their experiences in school, and their communities. With my partner, we created a page that focused on the students that represent our school; the blog is based on “Humans of New York” premise, which is where it got the title “Humans of SLA”. We investigated the diversity of the students in our community throughout the year.We have learned so much about the numerous people that occupy our school. This and many other experiences this year have helped me to reevaluate my thoughts about others through listening to the variety of stories told. While creating the page, I wanted to also create a magazine where I could put a few of the stories I’ve heard out there and also learn about more of the people that I get to see everyday at school and their experiences in and outside of the school building. I have been privileged to interact with so many different personalities, and hope to continue to learn about the many people of the world. By doing this I can deepen my understanding of different life experiences. When I reflect on the events going on in the world around me, I am staggered by the sheer volume of ugliness that goes on in just one week on Earth. I want my my experience to inform me in ways that I can be a voice of peace and reason in a world that often overwhelms. Even though this is something that I have had to do for school, it’s also something that that is helping me in life, and something that I take with me when meeting new people.
