Family

What´s a family and family types

A FAMILY is

an organization, the basis for society, where parents and children interact. It is guided by social and cultural norms and rules which the members of the family transmit. The general rule is that there exist deep and prolonged affective bonds (relationships between siblings tend to be longer) and that the lives of all the members influence each other.

Patterns of parenting styles are based mainly on two aspects of parenting behavior:

Control: degree to which parents manage their children’s behavior.

Warmth: degree to which parents are accepting and responsive to their children’s behavior (as opposed to being unresponsive and rejecting).

4 TYPES OF FAMILY

Authoritarian HIGH control and LOW Warmth

Permissive / Laissez-Faire LOW control and HIGH warmth

Rejecting / Neglecting: Indifferent

LOW control and LOW warmth

Authoritative (democratic) HIGH control and HIGH warmth

STRONG FAMILIES:

- Talk

- Plan

- Work

- Play

- Eat

- Go to events

- Share values and principles

- Support and enjoy creative effort

- Identify and celebrate strengths

- Have fun

- Laugh and learn

- Promote healthy behaviors

Family dynamic starts to suffer important change when children reach puberty. These progressive variations are frequently received with surprise. Disagreements between parents and children tend to accentuate.

Sometimes the social changes of out time further complicate the parent-children relationship. What to do to avoid these conflicts, or to improve an already weak relationship?

Recognize differences, eventhough there exists a generation gap, it’s not that deep. Even if behavior between parents and children is different, the values, attitudes and beliefs are still very similar. Develop a good communication system, keep the communication channels open.
