President ’ s
LETTER
Featuring our Young Futurists
W elcome to our new Magazine : HUMAN FUTURES ! It ’ s been a few years since WFSF had a regular magazine , as the Executive Board and I have busied ourselves with other projects , which you will read about here .
A lot of attention is focused today on technological innovation . Yet more than ever we need to focus on designing and creating alternative SOCIAL , CULTURAL & HUMAN FUTURES .
“
Our young people are the creative and courageous avant-garde of radical change .”
As the Editor / Curator of this first issue of HUMAN FUTURES I wanted to strongly focus on the incredibly creative , empowering and outstanding work of young WFSF members . As they really are the future of this organisation we need to encourage them to step up and make their presence felt . I want to especially thank Kelly Kornet for her generous contribution to the creation of this fresh and vibrant magazine . I also want to thank all the contributors to this issue , most of whom are long-term members of the Federation .
In this first issue of Human Futures we begin our feature articles by sharing the far-reaching impact of the World Futures Learning Lab ( LEALA ) our WFSF-UNESCO Participation Project implemented over several years and coordinated by Maya Van Leemput . This issue also highlights the work or our younger members in : experiential futures ( Stuart Candy and Jake Dunagan ), forward futures theatre ( Alethia Berenice Montero ), altruistic gaming ( Dana Klisanin ), city futures ( Shermon Cruz ) and news from the Middle East ( Victor Vahidi Motti ).
This diverse issue also includes cartoons ( Patrick Corsi ), exciting news about the Futures Film Festival ( David Wright ), updates on the Teach the Future Project ( Peter Bishop ) and other WFSF news from around the world . We conclude with new books , in memoriam , a visit to our archives and news of upcoming futures events .
This Magazine is a medium for WFSF to hand over to the next generation of futurists . Based on responses to my requests they are very keen to take this on . Let ’ s all support the visions and higher purpose of the emerging leaders of our collective futures .
Warmly ,
Dr . Jennifer M . Gidley President , World Futures Studies Federation ( 2009-2013 , 2013-2017 )
