A Letter from the
President
Dear Members and other futures interested
colleagues and friends,
I am happy to present this new issue of our Magazine, Human Futures.
Behind this issue and the coming issues of Human Futures there is now
a dedicated team of people volunteering to create a unique and interest-
ing Magazine. As the President of the WFSF I am both impressed and
happy about the engagement and the pool of competences this group
represents. The ambition now is that the Human Futures Magazine shall
appear every third month (quarterly). We hope that the articles and the per-
spectives within this issue appeal to your interest and thoughts.
In many ways, Futures research of today has to reinvent both basic philo-
sophical approaches and its sociopolitical role. The history of futurist ac-
tivities, shows that both the role as scholars and as sociopolitical actors,
were tremendously important. Some of the most impressive contributions
of our field were that innovative and creative thinking were part of a socio-
political movement, more than 50 years ago, when futures studies became
global and oriented itself toward the new ecological paradigm and the
work of Club of Rome.
However, that was more than 50 years ago. What about today? What could
become the mission of futurists and the content of futures research in the
coming decades? Of course, systems-thinking, ecological approaches, en-
vironmental and climate challenges still are relevant to a high degree. But,
