Human Connections. It’s a fancy term for something that’s actually pretty simple. All it means is that humans will go around and be social with each other, whether they personally know that someone or not. Humans by nature are social beings. We generally live in places that are largely populated by other people and have random, small conversations daily.
When I was younger I never noticed any of that. It seems like I really started thinking
about those things when I moved into the city. I know that I experienced it before then, but guess I just never really put much thought into it before this year. I remember this one lady from a plane ride when I was younger; She was so sweet and I’ll never forget the advice she gave me (more on page ). Human connection started off as something I just wondered about; This intangible thing that was everywhere all at once.
All in all, I would never be able to tell you why this interests me so much; I just know that it does. Humans can be so different from one another while being exactly the same. There is this word I found earlier this year that really explained all of this for me; sonder. Sonder is not actually a word defined in the way I am about to explain, it’s a word that a man, John Koenig, made up to describe a feeling that everyone seems to get at one point in their lives. Sonder is defined as “the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own.”
This entire magazine is based upon the same principal as sonder. That while other people are living their lives and we may never be able to know the stories of all of the people around us, we are, all of us, connected. Whether it’s family and friends or a stranger on the street, everyone has a story and just because you may not know it, does not mean that you may never touch that person’s life or that person won’t ever touch your life...
