1 Two buildings collapsed after an explosion in Harlem on Wednesday
morning, leaving at least seven people dead and wounding more than
60 others. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a press conference
that the explosion, which occurred around 9:15 a.m., was caused by a
gas leak. In a statement to the New York Daily News, Con Edison said
neighbors called to complain about the smell of gas 18 minutes before
the explosion. “This is a tragedy of the worst kind because there was no
indication in time to save people,” de Blasio said. Authorities continued
to search through the wreckage Thursday, hoping to find others still alive.
The buildings housed apartments, a church and a piano store.
