WE WERE HERE NPS; CHRISTIAN FUCHS National Council of Negro Women Mary McLeod Bethune achieved great success at the Washington, D.C., townhouse at 1318 Vermont Ave. NW. The house was the first headquarters of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) and was Bethune’s last home in D.C. From here, Bethune and the NCNW spearheaded strategies and developed programs that advanced the interests of African-American women. Today, it is a national historic site. HUFFINGTON 02.23.14
