‘A FIERCE CHAMPION’
Janet Yellen was confirmed as the
chairwoman of the Federal Reserve on Monday.
She is the first woman to lead the institution,
which controls interest rates in order to direct
inflation and employment levels. The Fed’s
general role and powers make it one of the most influential institutions in the global economy.
“The American people will have a fierce champion who understands that the ultimate goal
of economic and financial policy making is to improve the lives, jobs and standard of living of
American workers and their families,” President Barack Obama said of Yellen in a statement.
