1 Investigators are still trying to determine exactly why Asiana Airlines Flight
214 crashed last weekend in San Francisco, killing two teenagers and initially
sending more than 180 people to the hospital. The pilots were relying on
automated cockpit equipment, investigators said, but did not realize early
enough that they were flying “significantly below” the target speed when
approaching the runway. The pilot had 43 hours experience flying a Boeing 777,
but had never landed one at at the San Francisco airport, a spokesman said. The
co-pilot was on his first flight as an instructor.
