The Hottest
Day Ever
Turns 100
July 11, 2013, marks 100
years since the hottest day
on record in the U.S., when
temperatures reached 134
degrees in Death Valley. Calif.
But another U.S. heat record
was broken in 2012 — it was
the warmest on record for the
continental U.S., according
to NOAA, with average
temperatures reacing 55.3.
A full degree warmer then the
previous record set in 1998,
2012’s average temperature
was also 3.2 degrees warmer
then the 20th century U.S.
average. Ahead, we illustrate
average temperatures in the
U.S. from 1913 to today by
state. — James Gerken
