ARIZONA VOTING LAW
STRUCK DOWN
In a 7-2 vote on Monday, the Supreme Court
ruled that Arizona can’t require people to
prove they’re U.S. citizens before registering
for federal elections. Arizona and other states
would first need federal or court permission
before changing the requirements. Federal law “precludes Arizona from requiring a federal form
applicant to submit information beyond that required by the form itself,” Justice Antonin Scalia
wrote in the majority opinion. A VP at the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund
said this “sends a strong message that states cannot block their citizens from registering to vote
by superimposing burdensome paperwork requirements on top of federal law.”

Journalist and author Michael Hastings
died in a car crash in Los Angeles this
week at 33. A contributing editor at
Rolling Stone, Hastings was best known
for his article “The Runaway General,”
which infamously led to the resignation of
Gen. Stanley McChrystal, commander of
U.S. forces in Afghanistan. Hastings was
also a reporter at Buzzfeed and an author
of two books. “He wrote stories that
would otherwise have gone unwritten, and
without him there are great stories that
will go untold,” Buzzfeed Editor-in-Chief
Ben Smith said in a statement.
