‘NO POSSIBLE
JUSTIFICATION’

The Justice Department secretly obtained the phone
records of editors and reporters at the Associated
Press for April and May 2012, the news organization
reported this week. “There can be no possible
justification for such an overbroad collection of the
telephone communications of The Associated Press
and its reporters,” AP president Gary Pruitt said in a
letter to Attorney General Eric Holder. The DOJ did
not specify why it took the records, but officials have
previously said a criminal investigation is underway
to determine who leaked information for a May 2012
AP report that the CIA stopped an al Qaeda affiliate’s
plot to detonate a bomb on a U.S.-bound airplane. The
Obama administration has brought more cases against
people suspected of leaking classified information
than all previous presidents combined.
