The Supreme Court held two days of hearings this week in
cases involving same-sex marriage, as a slew of politicians
announced their support and polls showed public backing has
hit a record high. On Tuesday, the court heard a case from two
couples challenging Proposition 8, a 2008 voter-approved
ban on gay marriage in California. The focus turned Wednesday
to the Defense of Marriage Act, which prevents legally
married gay couples from receiving the same federal benefits
as married straight ones. A majority of justices appeared to
question the constitutionality of the 1996 law. The court is
not expected to issue rulings on either case until June.
