Parental Leave: U.S. vs. The World
When Australia passed a parental leave law in
2010, the U.S. became the only industrialized
nation not to mandate paid maternity leave.
Lesotho, Swaziland and Papua New Guinea are
the only other countries that do not. Most nations

ensure at least three months of paid leave, and
many give fathers benefits too. Only about 16
percent of U.S. employers offer fully paid leave,
and many families take on debt or turn to public
