A Washington state mom is furious that
her daughters were badly sunburned after
their school prevented them from applying
sunscreen during a five-hour field day. Jesse
Michener says that Violet, 11, and Zoe, 9,
experienced “hurts-to-look-at burns” because
the school has a policy against allowing
children to apply sunscreen without a doctor’s
note. When she posted photos of the girls’
red faces on her blog, parents across the
country shared her outrage over similar school
policies. “They will heal this week, but long
term effects are yet to be seen,” Michener told
The Huffington Post.
LONESOME GEORGE DIES AT 100
A giant tortoise named Lonesome George, a symbol of
Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands and the last surviving tortoise
from the island La Pinta, was found dead at the Galapagos
National Park. George was estimated to be 100 years old,
but he never managed to procreate. His name resulted
from a series of unsuccessful attempts to get him to mate
with female tortoises of a different Galapagos subspecies.
MARY
CHENEY
GETS
MARRIED
The daughter of former Vice
President Dick Cheney, Mary, and her
partner, Heather Poe, were married
in Washington, D.C. “Very happy to
announce that as of this morning,
Heather and I are legally married
(at least in DC). 20 years to the day
after our first date,” Cheney, who has
two children with Poe, wrote on her
Facebook page. Dick Cheney publicly
endorsed gay marriage in 2009, but
while in office he said he believed the
issue should be left to the states.
