Going the Distance
Since Matthew Webb became the
first person to swim the English
Channel in 1875, the chilly waterway
has become the biggest test for any
endurance swimmer. The Channel
spans 21 miles at its shortest
distance—and while hundreds of
people attempt to swim it each year,
only about a tenth of them make
it all the way across.
