ABACUS: Mental Math Class Help children become faster at maths & improve memory In China, the earliest known written documentation for the Chinese abacus was in the 2nd century BC. It was also known as suànpán (算盤, lit. “Counting tray”). It had two beads at the upper part and 5 beads at the lower part. The abacus is now widely used throughout Asian schools as an aid to faster mental calculation. Using an abacus can help to speed up mental maths and problem solving as well as improving children’s listening, concentration, memory capacity, speed and even imagination skills! Hua Hsia Chinese School now offers classes in the use of the soroban for children aged 5 to 11 years old. Our weekly classes are fun and help to boost confidence.
