ABACUS: Mental Math Class
Help children become faster at maths & improve memory
In China, the earliest known written
documentation for the Chinese abacus
was in the 2nd century BC. It was also
known as suànpán (算盤, lit. “Counting
tray”). It had two beads at the upper
part and 5 beads at the lower part. The
abacus is now widely used throughout
Asian schools as an aid to faster mental
calculation. Using an abacus can help
to speed up mental maths and problem
solving as well as improving children’s
listening, concentration, memory
capacity, speed and even imagination
skills! Hua Hsia Chinese School now
offers classes in the use of the soroban
for children aged 5 to 11 years old. Our
weekly classes are fun and help to boost
confidence. We also conduct Abacus
Grading Tests to monitor and record
students’ achievement of abacus learning.
