Afternoon all.
After a long, drab, very wet stormy winter, the first day of spring did not
disappoint with glorious sunshine and some lovely countryside on our way to play
Boston United last Saturday. Boston is a small town and port on the tidal reaches
of the river Witham in Lincolnshire, whose namesake named by emigrants from
the area in America is slightly better known.
This was my first visit to The Jakemans Stadium and I have to say it was a joy to
see an old ground with so much character and history. Yes, modern stadia are
obviously safer with much better amenities, access etc; but they can be soulless
places at times and it will be sad in some respects eventually to lose these
grounds to progress.
We started the game brightly but defensive errors saw us two down after only
fifteen minutes play and left us with ( cliché warning ) “ a mountain to climb”.
Maybe if we had scored instead of hitting the underside of the bar straight after
half-time things might have been different, but as it was, having to chase the
game left us open to the counter attack and Boston, who always looked
dangerous going forward, added two more. It was frustrating as we had had so
much of the ball. You could not fault the team and the effort they put in, but in the
end Boston were worthy winners.
Excellent away support again showed the very small minority of fans who so
disgracefully criticised Rob and a player at our last home game how to support
the team win, draw or lose. We have exceeded all our expectations in both Cup
and League and are still in the promotion mix with all to play for. On a personal
note, we should show the players the respect they deserve for what they have
already achieved this season.
