TALK
WITH DARREN PLANT
Back at the start of the season, I remember
that the majority of us would have been
content with a year of consolidation and
that a mid-table finish would be deemed a
success. However, during the first half last
weekend, I stood amongst people targeting
specific players with a barrage of abuse as
soon as they made a bad pass or had a bad
first touch. Absolute madness!
After our superb start to the season our
expectations have changed, but why has
the attitude of some of the people who
attend our games? I understand that people
have their favourites, but why does that
make other players more susceptible to
having the confidence sucked out of them
because they weren't a part of our multiple
triumphs last season? Any player that joins
our football club must relish the opportunity
to prove themselves, but they need the
platform to perform. A select few of you
aren't giving them that at the moment.
The so-called ‘fans’ (I should reiterate a
select few) who were quick to jump on the
players' backs last weekend need to get
some perspective. We are joint-fifth in the
league having already played twice against
the top two teams in the division. We should
be enjoying ourselves in our current league
position and if you focused your energy on
encouraging the players rather than taking
cheap shots at every mistake, then maybe
we would have a lot more to enjoy come the
end of the campaign.
Today is going to be a tough match. Boston
United are a very impressive outfit, yet they
went five games without a win before
Christmas. However, they've won their last
two at home in front of a decent home
crowd, scoring ten goals in the process. If
we've got everyone pulling in the same
direction, give me a reason why we can't do
the same...?
Enjoy the game
I'm all for the shouts of "Come on Dis" and
"Keep going Elliott", but what about some
of the other players? Robbie ThompsonBrown and Paul McCone worked their
backsides off last weekend, yet barely got a
mention or got the credit that they
deserved. There aren't five or six players in
a Hednesford shirt, there are eleven, and
each one of them values your support. This
isn't last May, this is January and we are
five matches without a win. All of the players
are buckling down to turn things around and
they don't deserve some of the comments
that they have been receiving. It's not about
paying your entrance money to have your
own opinion; it's about paying your entrance
money to urge your team on to three points.
