HSE International ISSUE 93 | Page 5

www.hseinternational.co.uk Foreword: December 2014 This month in HSE International: T he HSE (Health and Safety Executive) recently released the health and safety statistics for Great Britain 2013/14. Although the amount of deaths in the workplace has decreased since 2012/13, other injuries to employees reported under RIDDOR remained unchanged at 77,593, highlighting the need to promote best practice and the sharing of knowledge in occupational health and safety management with everyone around us. This month, our ‘News’ section focus details the latest injury and ill-health statistics from the HSE, the industry sectors at the highest risk and how we must commit to improve standards. We introduce the launch of the RoSPA 2015 Occupational Health and Safety Awards and present ‘No Time To Lose’, the latest IOSH (Institute of Occupational Health and Safety) Occupational Cancer Campaign. We announce the newly appointed President of IOSH, and highlight the latest announcement from one of this month’s featured organisations, London Fire Brigade, regarding their support of a candles, open fires and fireworks warning from Claudia Winkleman, after her daughter was hospitalised following a Halloween party. Aspire Defence Services Ltd (ADSL) takes pride as this month’s HSE International cover story. As the largest infrastructure PFI (Private Finance Initiative) contract ever let by the MoD, RoSPA Gold Award winners ADSL provide Total Facilities Management services for the four Army garrisons on Salisbury Plain and Aldershot. We speak to Estates Technical Services Director and Chief Engineer, Chris Cockerill and other members of the Aspire team about their successful methodologies, the ways in which health and safety is owned at the highest level, and the organisation’s longer term vision to be a Sustainable and Responsible Business. As part of our RoSPA Awards 2014 coverage, we introduce one of the leading providers of pallet, container and crate pooling services for many of the world’s largest supply chains, CHEP UK Ltd. The RoSPA Gold Award winner’s Senior Health and Safety Manager, Hugh Kempton discusses his award winning approach to health and safety, CHEP’s key to success and their commitment to providing supply chain solutions that not only meet customer needs, but also minimise impact on the environment. For setting health and safety standards and celebrating best practice, we present our British Safety Council International Safety Awards 2014 review. Highly regarded by those at the cutting edge of health, safety and environmental management, the awards recognise commitment to high standards, achievement and exemplary performance. In our ‘Facilities & Property Management’ section we speak to Aaron Giudice, Business Development Manager at leading independent building services engineering integrators, Sowga Ltd. We discuss the company’s successes, aims and their vision to provide exceptional quality services in a healthy and safe manner whilst contributing to their local and wider communities. We then introduce Trustmark, the Government endorsed, not-for-profit membership organisation providing an easy way for consumers to find expert tradespeople who abide by industry standards of competence and fair-trading. To round up the final issue of HSE International Magazine for 2014, we speak to one of the largest firefighting and rescue organisations in the world, London Fire Brigade (LFB). In our ‘Emergency Services’ section, we speak to Dr. Adrian Bevan, Head of Health and Safety at LFB about his multi-disciplined approach to fire safety management, the systems in place for monitoring health and safety performance and the organisation’s strong emphasis on fire prevention and community safety. As we approach the end of 2014 and with Christmas fast approaching, I would like to wish all our readers, clients, associates and staff a very Merry Christmas and a safe, healthy and prosperous 2015.
