Regulations and guidance on the use of safety barriers for workplace
protection has been a stone unturned, until now. An increasing amount
of facilities are realising that there’s a need for segregation of vehicles and
efficient traffic management, but there’s a lack of understanding on the
necessary steps to take.

There are rules, regulations and standards in place for almost every item
or process used in the workplace that poses a risk to employees:
evacuation, industrial vehicles, PPE, hazardous materials, guarding,
signage, emergency lighting and fire hazards. Current law states that
pedestrians or vehicles must be able to use a traffic route without

appropriate barrier for individual applications and environments,
calculating the potential impact force along with test methods,
measurements and criteria for safety barrier use in the workplace.
For optimal site safety, PAS 13:2017 advises assessing the initial risk of an
entire working area before implementing a traffic management system.
The document then recommends specific control measures and criteria
for the implementation of pedestrian routes or crossing points for
example, to facilitate safe movement of vehicles and pedestrians
through and around the workplace.
