FEATURE : PARTING SHOT

We remember …

Once again , the sport has lost a number of competitors , officials and characters since the last edition of Historic Racing .
In recent weeks we sadly lost one of our long standing scrutineers Henry Fairhead , and a fuller appreciation of his life and work for the Club will be found elsewhere in this magazine .
From the top of the sport Carlos Reutemann ( 79 ), who died in July , was one of the leading Grand Prix drivers of his generation . The Argentinian won 12 Grands Prix during a decade in F1 with , notably , Ferrari , Brabham and Williams after first making his name in European Formula 2 .
Tragedy struck at Brands Hatch at the end of July when an accident claimed the life of experienced marshal Robert Foote . It is desperately sad that one of our stalwart volunteers lost his life in the course of the sport that he loved and we send sincere condolences to his family and many , many friends within the marshalling fraternity .
Bernard Cottrell was one of the UK ’ s prominent clerks of the course and was known to many for his work with both the BRSCC and , more recently , the 750 Motor Club . Bernard was also widely known and regarded across motor sport for his role at Haymarket Publishing , where he was a leading member of the organising team for the annual Autosport International for many years . He did much to support and further the training of race officials and he will be sadly missed .
Frenchman Jean-Pierre Jaussaud was a leading Formula 2 contender in the early 1970s and was twice a winner at Le Mans . He remained involved in the sport right through to the final weeks of his life until his death aged 84 . In HSCC circles he is remembered by his former March 712 , which continues to be raced in Historic F2 in great style by Frenchman Robert Simac .
From the very first HSCC grid at Castle Combe in 1966 we recently lost Stephen Curtis . Stephen had raced for much of his life and was still competing in his later years in both formula Junior and 50s Sports Cars . He was a great racer , a true enthusiast and a gentleman and he will be greatly missed .
Journalist and broadcaster Graham Robson left a legacy of more than 150 books , notably on Ford Escorts and Ford rally cars , where he was a renowned authority . Meanwhile Tony Bridge , a leading racer in Clubmans and Special Saloon racing of the late 1970s and 1980s , sadly died after an illness . We were particularly sad to learn of

the death of former Historic Formula Ford racer and historic sporting trials competitor John Ford from near Cheltenham in Gloucestershire . Tragically , John died suddenly in late August aged just 53 . He was best known for partnering Neil Davis in trials and his love for the sport shone through on even the darkest and muddiest of days . Our thoughts go to his parents , his wife Carol , his sons Aaron and Nathan and his daughter Morgan , as well as Neil and his many friends across the sport and in historic trials .
