Celebrating another win at Cadwell Park

Remembering Charles

The loss of Charles Barter late in 2022 came as an enormous blow to countless people , including many in and around the HSCC . We asked several key members of the Club to give us their reflections .
Roger Bevan “ We will miss him a great deal . Charles was very much involved with the club at the highest and deepest level for so many years that he ran a very successful series that will continue in his memory . He was also a very fine driver , very competitive in a very competitive car . We will all miss him . He was very active on the board with continuous input , and he kept us all on our toes . We all have the highest respect for Charles , and we will miss him .”
Andy Dee-Crowne “ Charles was dedicated to the Club . I first met Charles about 20 years ago in the early days when I started racing with the HSCC . He was a stalwart , of course , of the club and was one of the most recognisable people in the Club .
“ He was vice chairman and he was the chair of 70s Road Sports and he ran that series for many , many years . Everybody knew Charles and everybody respected Charles . He was no mean peddler and was still winning races right the way up until just before he was taken ill .
“ It was a big shock to us all when he died . He was a great proponent of the sport . He was a champion in his own right in hillclimbing before he switched to racing , and he was an incredibly , incredibly quick racer . He ’ s going to be sorely missed by the HSCC and we won ’ t see his like again , I ’ m sure .”
Chris Sharples “ I won ’ t forget the man . He was thoughtful , kind and caring . He was a good friend and a good source of sound advice . I will miss him .

“ Despite his calm personality Charles was passionate about the Club . We were together on the HSCC board for some nine years . Although he was the Road Sports representative , Charles ’ greatest contribution was to defend the interests of the whole membership . As we gathered round the table , time and again he reminded us that the bulk of members were racing on tight budgets paid by monthly salaries . He argued that we needed to look after the likes of HRS , Road Sports and Formula Ford members . Keep their
