at Snetterton when Will headed a family one-two . “ We acquired the blue one this year because I did a swap with Russell Patterson . He had our big class A car and we swapped it for this plus I had some money out of a Scotsman ! Now both William and I can race in 70s Road Sports in the same class .”
In fact , the faithful Plus 8 is a car that can be versatile , with the option of running in both Historic Road Sports and 70s Road Sports . “ The only difference is the Moss gearbox ,” said Richard . “ I ’ ve got another one exactly the same colour . But it ’ s a ‘ 68 car , which is one of the first ones the factory ever built .”
There is now more time for Morganeering as Richard has retired from his business that was in kitchen gadgets , but there is some land that needs tending . “ We ’ re racing in 70s Road Sports because it ’ s just a great series . I stopped doing 70s back in 2013 , I think , and then went and did HRS for a change . We thought we ’ d come back and do some 70s and Julian Barter is back out again and some of the best racing I ’ ve ever had was against him . We really did have some monster races and with Paul Conway as well , so it would be good if he ’ d come back .”
Will ( now 26 ) has worked on the hospitality side of Formula One but is also doing some property development work . “ my last race in a modern car was in 2015 . It ’ s all a question of sponsorship and budgets and things have moved on .

“ The cost gets out of control really ,” he said . “ It would be nice to do it but I ’ d rather focus on other things and enjoy the old cars . Not many people get to say they can share a racing car with their dad . I ’ m lucky to be still able to race , but at the moment modern racing haemorrhages money . So I ’ m very happy to be racing in historics . Coming out and spending time with your dad is very special and we ’ ve
done a couple of two driver races so we ’ re very lucky in that respect .”
However , this year they are on-track rivals on the 70s Road Sports grid . “ Yes , we are competitive , but mum ’ s probably not too happy that we ’ re in the same race . But we ’ re not out there to do anything silly . At the end of the day , they ’ re lovely cars and they ’ re not cheap to repair !”
