Jackson on his way to FJ victory
Third place was an entertaining contest between Peter Garland ’ s Morgan Plus 8 and Jonathan Stringer ’ s Lotus 7 . Garland did most of the leading but a wild moment on the grass on the exit of Agostini mid-race allowed the cheeky Lotus to dive ahead . However , power eventually told and Garland re-asserted himself in third while Patrick Ward-Booth completed the top five in his Ginetta G4 .
A tremendous 70s Road Sports grid featured a whole gaggle of front runners but no one had any answer to the pace of the Morgan Plus 8s of Will Plant and his father Richard . They lined up at the front and , though there were no team orders , Richard admitted that his chances of staying with his son were modest . Sure enough , Will edged away and won convincingly as Richard also went clear of the pack to take a strong second at a circuit he admits is not his favourite .
Jeremy Clark , defending champion , ran third in the early stages , but a misfire hit the Lotus Elan and he eventually retired . He had been chased by the TVRs of Dave Karaskas and Antony Ross so they moved up to third and fourth , with Karaskas ahead by a little under two seconds at the flag as Ross completed a most encouraging debut in his newly acquired car . Jim Dean ( Lotus Europa ) and Lotus Elan racer Nigel Armstrong completed the top six .

Jackson ’ s clearest win of the weekend came in the opening round of the Historic Formula Junior Championship . After putting his Brabham BT2 on pole by nearly three and a half seconds , it was pretty certain that Jackson would win at a canter . And that ’ s what he did , enjoying pushing the Brabham to the limit in an impressive display that took him 42s clear of the of the rest .
Second place featured a fine battle between the Lotuses of Nick Fennell and Adrian Russell . It was nip and tuck all the way until the flag where Fennell took the verdict by just 16 hundredths of
a second . Mark Woodhouse , back in his Lotus 20 / 22 and the increasingly rapid Tim Child ( Cooper T59 ) battled mightily for fourth and it was Woodhouse who eventually took the place , while Ray Mallock in his U2 Mk2 was easily the best of the front-engined pack .
Ultimately Classic Formula 3 wins were shared between Andrew Smith and Benn Tilley , but that doesn ’ t tell the full story of an absorbing contest in the second race . In the opener , Smith edged clear from the start and romped away to win at a canter as Tilley took a secure second with Tony Hancock third
