REVIEW : HISTORIC FORMULA FORD
The lead pack at Brands

Jackson again

After all the uncertainty of the Covid pandemic it was pleasing to see a return to healthy grids during 2021 . The calendar for Historic Formula Ford was well spaced and at popular circuits so good competitive racing was expected and our drivers , both experienced and not so experienced , did not let us down . By Ted Pearson .
Multiple champion Cam Jackson was out in his trusty Winkelmann , prepared by Neil Fowler Motorsport with main opposition – all season long , it transpired – from Tom McArthur , in Simon Hadfield Motorsports ’ Titan and Horatio Fitz- Simon in one of Speedsport ’ s Merlyns . Other front runners , past championship winners and race winners included Danny Stanzl , Matt Wrigley , Callum Grant , and Linton Stutely who was rewarded with a massively deserved race win at the final race of the year . The racing was always competitive and very close – maybe too close at times and , in the main , fair . Cam started the year with convincing wins at Snetterton followed by more at Silverstone , Donington and Brands Hatch GP . At Silverstone in May his wins were possibly overshadowed by the fantastic , close fought battle that took place for second in both races . If that were the race for the lead it would have been called a classic .
At Cadwell Park a new name really came to the fore ; Samuel Harrison , the 17-year-old A level student from York who pushed and fought and tried everything to get past Cam . At that meeting - and others - he showed he is
one to watch and will surely be looking for his first ( of many ) wins in 2022 .
It was at Donington that Cam suffered his first defeat of the year when perseverance and race craft allowed Tom McArthur to get his first 2021 win in race two . Tom went on to win at Oulton Park , Mallory Park and one at the Silverstone Finals to mount a very serious championship challenge .
Horatio Fitz-Simon , the other main challenger for overall honours , showed that persistence , patience and ability pays off with a long overdue win at Silverstone after two magnificent races . In both races the top four were covered by less than half a second at the flag after 15 minutes of unbelievably close , slipstreaming racing . Horatio and Speedsport had worked tirelessly throughout the year so to see the chequered flag must have been sweet indeed .
Our Over 50 ’ s Championship was as hotly contested as ever with Brian Morris , Tim Brise , Ross Drybrough and Kevin Stanzl being the pre-season favourites who were regularly running well into the top end of the field . Brian was fast and consistent and thoroughly deserved his championship win but Tim , Kevin and Ross tried their bests to wrest the honours from him . Unfortunately , Ross endured a nasty accident at Brands which put him out of racing until October and the whole paddock was delighted to see his return at the Finals . Whilst writing a review it is all too easy to concentrate on the winners , but the core of the championship is made up of the regular , loyal competitors who enter all , or as many as they can , events throughout the year . They are what makes the championship what it is and I would like to thank everyone for their support and encouragement .
2021 was a great season of Historic Formula Ford racing complete with a return of the social evenings that everyone enjoys so much . I can ’ t wait until the start of the 2022 season .
