“ I started off watching my dad Mark race that car that we ’ ve got now . The Classic field is very competitive and the front of the field is really , really good . This year , we ’ re just struggling a bit to get the car working with the new tyres .
“ As racing goes , it is accessible and affordable . I think you could get a car for a reasonable amount of money . With a DIY person or somebody helping , you can get the car to be as good as any car on the grid for not stupid money . I think as competitive motor sport goes for sensible money you ’ d struggle to get better .
“ There are people around to help you out . At the first race we ever did at Silverstone , we snapped a throttle cable in qualifying . Mike Gardiner gave us one and I passed him on the last lap of the first race .”
“ We should say as well that Simon Hadfield has given us loads of help . He ’ s pretty much rebuilt our Lola over the winter . It ’ s like Trigger ’ s broom with more new bits than old bits . I think after Simon ’ s had it , it is more like it was originally than it how we had it .”

“ My neighbour is a guy called Charlie Gordon- Lennox . He ’ s certainly a bigger land owner than I am , but he ’ s a very good neighbour as well . “ I ’ ve come to it later , 50-years-old . I ’ ve loved racing for years . I did track days and I did a little bit of hill climbing and then I looked for a Formula Ford and found the Crossle , which was disassembled . I bought it in pieces relatively cheaply and it came with the gearbox , so I found an engine and put it all together myself . And then I realised I wasn ’ t quite that much of an engineer after all !
“ This is genuinely affordable . Once you pay the entry fees and a little bit of testing , you can do it yourself . I ’ m primarily running myself but I can call on the help of Mark at Shaws , which makes a big difference .
“ With all the help on hand and lots of advice , it ’ s a super friendly grid . To have people like Rick Morris come around and give you a few tips is unbelievable .
“ I sit down and have a beer and eat with people who I would never come across . And we ’ ve got one thing in common and it ’ s like a family . It ’ s my best weekends of the year .”
