Understanding oil

The experts at Witham Motorsport guide us through the oils used over the last century . continued

SAE 30 and SAE 50 oils These oils were used in engines manufactured from 1900 to 1950 . These are mineral monograde lubricants with very low detergent level for optimal compatibility with paper , felt or fabric gaskets . Small detergent level avoids soot and deposits remaining in the lubricating circuit . This can be used as break-in oil if drain intervals are short . They also have complete compatibility with nonferrous metals such as brass , bronze and copper . Typically , these cars suffer from a long period of immobilization , therefore we add reinforced adherence for an easier start .
20W50 oils This is a mineral multigrade lubricant with middle detergent level , compatible with elastomer gaskets . The 20W50 oil meets the standards of 1950 through to 1970 , while benefiting from the advanced technology of the new Motul lubricants . The viscosity is perfectly suitable for narrowed running clearances of the engine it might suffer to the significant progress at the time , as regards of metallurgy , casting and machining . It has anti-corrosion and anti-wear properties .
2100 15W50 oils This is the updated version of 1966 ’ s 2100-oil , the first semi-synthetic lubricant in the automotive market . It was developed for naturally aspirated and turbocharged original engines built after 1970 . The semi-synthetic lubricant is formulated with modern technology detergent level and meets recent standards ( API SH / CF ) plus offers a better cold viscosity in order to reduce wear during engine start . We reinforced the lubricant with a synthetic base ( oxidation stability ) allowing stay-ingrade viscosity for a continuous engine oil pressure .
A specific racing oil for classic racing ? Our state of the art 300V Motorsport line based on ESTER Core technology , is perfectly suitable for rebuilt engines used in historic racing cars , ensuring maximum performance and longevity .
MOTUL - 167 years of experience and working with FIVA Together with excellent products , MOTUL also attaches great importance to individual advice and assistance in explaining the correct use of the products . Frequently the wrong lubricants are still being used for most classic cars . In more than half of the cases , the vehicles are driven with not enough oil , or the urgently necessary oil changes are either carried out at the wrong point in time or not at regular intervals . This can cause considerably greater wear , overheating , leaks or far higher oil consumption , and even capital engine damage in the worst case .
This is just one reason why the World Association of Historic Vehicle Clubs ( FIVA - Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens ) and MOTUL started to work together this April . Initially , this cooperation entails exchanging information and contacts on an international level , together with shared marketing activities . The new partnership will benefit above all the lovers of historic vehicles in the corresponding countries . In future , MOTUL ’ s contribution will consist of providing information and training about lubricant technology , training the technical coordinators and dealing with complex technical issues . This includes , for example , reliable allocation of the best lubricant for the specific vehicle .
