Julian Maynard
Maynard ’ s Lola
Historic F2 racer Julian Maynard has joined the Thundersports grid with the ex- Bobby Rahal Lola T290 . He his first run at Donington Park and scored two strong results in the car that Rahal first raced in 1973 . Later , Rahal found the car again and bought it back to restore and race and brought it to the Silverstone Classic one year . It then spent eight years with an American owner and Maynard acquired it in the spring .
“ Testing for Donington was the first time I ’ d sat in it ,” said Maynard , who has the car back in the original livery of Red Roof Inns . “ We ’ ll run this alongside the F2 car : it ’ s the same engine and the same era ,” said Maynard who used to race Sports 2000s and started in Formula Vee with fellow Thundersports racer Mark Richardson many years ago .
n Father and son Laurence and Tim Jacobsen fielded two cars at Silverstone when Tim gave their
Sports 2000 Shrike P16 its first race in Thundersports . The Shrike ’ s designer Richard Owen has helped them get the car sorted in recent testing . It is the 1989 car that Eugene O ’ Brien used to win the 1990 Sports 2000 title . They ’ ve had the Shrike for about 18 months and will race it alongside their MGB .
n Oliver Marcais had his second ever race at Silverstone in the family owned MGB . He raced in the GT and Sports Car Cup , which is organised by his parents Flavien and Vanessa . The 18-year-old A level student did some karting and had his first race in Equipe Classic at Brands Hatch recently . “ I ’ m just gaining experience ,” he said . “ The hour-long race is good seat time as I drove solo , and it ’ s all about getting experience .”
Wood gets a 782
Prolific historic single-seater racer Clive Wood has acquired the March 782 most recently raced by John Evans and plans to run it in more Historic Formula 2 races after a debut run at Silverstone .
“ I always wanted a 782 : they are very special ,” said Wood who also has a Formula 2 Chevron and races in Clubmans . “ I remember seeing them on Easter Monday at Thruxton and that was a pinnacle of my motor sport year when I was spectating .”
The ex-Frank Sytner / Sean Walker car is now with Dan Eagling at Lifetime Racing . Meanwhile , Wood ’ s Chevron B29 is nearing completion after a testing incident at Donington in March . n Leading motor racing photographer Jacob Ebrey hopes to race in the 80s Production series this year in his Porsche 944 S2 . He had expected to be able to join the grid on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit until work commitments took over . “ I ’ ve only done one event in it before now and 80s Production is perfect for me ,” said Ebrey who is based in Silverstone village .
Benn Tilley
n Benn Tilley made his Historic Formula Ford 2000 debut at Donington in the Delta T80 owned and prepared by Simon Ayliff . The car came from Neil Fowler ’ s team where it was raced by Brian Morris and is now available for hire via Ayliff Classics in Bourne in Lincolnshire . Ayliff invited Tilley to drive it for the first time and he showed good pace to finish both races in the top four .
