FEATURE : ROYAL AUTOMOBILE CLUB HISTORIC AWARDS
The Brands Hatch event scooped the big award

We win

‘ competitive event of the year ’

The Club has won one of the most prestigious awards in historic motor sport after being announced as winner of the ‘ Competitive Event of the Year ’ in the annual Royal Automobile Club Historic Awards .
The awards celebrate the historic motoring year and our Legends of Brands Hatch Super Prix was judged as the ‘ Competitive Event of the Year ’. Last year , Historic Formula 2 was named ‘ Race Series of the Year ’. The Brands Hatch event kick-started the 2020 historic racing season as the sport began to emerge from the first COVID-19 lockdown . This landmark event proved that historic racing could restart while staying firmly in line with UK government and Motorsport UK rules and guidelines in the face of the global pandemic .
An extraordinary effort by the HSCC team , led by Andy Dee-Crowne supported by the staff , officials and a raft of experienced volunteers , working in partnership with MotorSport Vision drew over 330 competitors and delivered an outstanding event on the superb Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit .
The event drew glowing praise from many competitors , marshals and spectators and brought a wonderful sense of normality and camaraderie back into the lives of many after more than three months of lockdown .
Andy Dee-Crowne said : “ To win major awards two years running is an exceptional achievement for the Club ,
which operates with a core HQ team of just four people . We are both delighted and proud to be recognised in these prestigious industry awards . We are a long-established Club and this award underlines our continuing place at the heart of historic racing .
“ Running the Super Prix this year was a massive challenge for our small team and it proved to be a huge success as the first major post-lockdown historic race meeting . Many new procedures and systems had to be implemented to deal with the ever-present COVID issues , but the whole event ran incredibly well .”
“ This event could not have taken place without the vision of Jonathon Palmer at MotorSport Vision and Hugh Chambers from Motorsport UK who worked tirelessly to get motor sport back on track . I also want to thank our members and guest competitors for their trust , understanding and compliance with those rules that were put in place to ensure everyone ’ s safety . The historic racing community has unfortunately lost some of its members to this indiscriminate virus and I would like , on behalf of the HSCC , to dedicate this award to all those who have lost loved ones .”
Chairman Roger Bevan added : “ My heartfelt thanks go to Andy and the office team , the volunteers and marshals , MotorSport Vision , Motorsport UK and of course to our racing members for their part in helping us win this fabulous award .”
Race series of the year
There was good news in the ‘ Race Series of the Year ’ award as the HSCC / FJHRA Formula Junior Championship was shortlisted after another tremendous season for the most popular historic racing category in the world .
However , the judges finally selected the GT and Sports Car Cup as the race series of the year and that was just reward for the work of Flavien and Vanessa Marcais .
In its 14th season , the GT and Sports Car Cup delivered outstanding racing for fabulous grids of Pre ’ 66 GT and Pre ’ 63 Sports-Racing Cars . With a focus on original cars and high driving standards , the series provided great racing in a sporting and friendly environment .
We look forward to welcoming the GT & SCC competitors to our Silverstone International Trophy meeting at Silverstone in May when their 2021 season opens on the mighty Grand Prix circuit .
