finished second overall to Cam Jackson . Not bad for only his second proper season in the car and he hopes to continue that form into 2021 .
“ The car is going well now and hopefully we ’ ll get out again this year , though I don ’ t think I ’ ll be doing any European meetings . I ‘ ve got an entry for the Goodwood Members ’ Meeting , which is only 40 minutes down the road for us . In my head , I ’ d planned to go to Copenhagen again because that was a fantastic social event and the family enjoyed going . We load up the campervan and trek to wherever we ’ re racing .”
That family element of the sport is really important and means that his wife Nicki and children George and Evie are involved and supportive . “ We all really enjoy it and people are getting to know them in the paddock as well and they are making friendships . That social side is worth the entry fee alone . We get to the circuit on a Friday night and have a barbecue and meet our friends , socialise , do some racing and then go home .”
Keith is quick to extoll the virtues of historic racing in general and Formula Junior in particular . “ I ’ m really enjoying being in historic racing and Formula junior is a good fit for what I can afford . I ’ d like to race a saloon car if the chance came along , but there is only so much stuff I can fit in the garage . For me , Formula Junior ticks all the boxes . there is a good mix of skill sets on track . You get to mix with people like Howden Ganley and Tony Goodwin : you ’ ve got an ex-F1 driver telling you how well you ’ ve driven ! To race anything further up the ladder would take more time and money .”
The Britannia project The 1960 run of Britannia Formula Juniors was rather short-lived and only three are known to have been built , of which Pickering ’ s is the second . This one went to the US from early on and finally came back to the UK in around 2000 . It is an early rear-engined car with disc brakes .
The Britannia was designed
by John Tojeiro for Ackland Geddes at Britannia Racing and when the company went into liquidation , Tojeiro took over the project , probably in lieu of outstanding money , and built six more cars . It seems that there were few , if any , significant results for the car under either badge . Previously , Tojeiro has designed a road-going sports car for Britannia but it was not a success and only six cars were built before the company folded .
