COLLEGE FRESHMAN
INJUSTICE
—in response to “Ain’t Gonna Let
Nobody Turn Me Around,” by The Roots
There once was a young black boy by the
name of Trayvon Martin.
He was walking from 7-11
with Skittles and black hoodie.
He was followed by a white man
with the name of Zimmerman.
This man attacked and shot
poor Tre Martin dead.
Trayvon Martin was killed.
Zimmerman was caught.
He was brought to court;
He was not found guilty.
And now he runs free
while a family grieves
the System has failed us.
Injustice!
A black man in Staten Island
had been caught selling cigarettes.
Police had come and pounced on him.
HPAC YOUNG WRITERS REVIEW
The poor man was tackled,
put into a chokehold by
one white officer.
“Help, I can’t breathe!”
He gasped out, until he was dead.
The media happened
The policeman was tried,
and yet we’re still targeted:
a black boy shot a police dog
and while he’s in jail
we’re being killed left and right.
The System has failed us.
Injustice!
Can I get a witness?
A Police Officer kills a black child.
Injustice!
We’re target practice.
Injustice!
They shot a boy in his grandmother’s bathroom.
They killed your young,
defenseless children.
They locked us up, kept us oppressed.
They took away our freedom
and our rights.
How far will they go to strike fear?
The police destroyed our families.
Somebody out there is hurting.
The police have ruined them,
And they will say: INJUSTICE!
Somebody say injustice!
Injustice!
We gotta let our voice be heard
Somebody bear with me your sorrows,
And say: Injustice!
Emmett Till was killed at age 14,
His Mother opened his casket,
showed his deformed face.
Injustice destroyed us!
Sean Bell was shot fifteen times.
A white officer claimed
Sean Bell had a taser.
Oscar Grant was killed
in Fruitvale Station.
On New Years night,
leaving his wife, mother and child,
grieving for his loss
Injustice for all our black families.
Injustice!
