THE STORY OF OUR FRIENDSHIP
Do you remember that day last June?
When we went to Coney Island
We spent the entire time on kiddie rides
And I was afraid I’d get a tan around my glasses
Do you remember the fun we had?
And the enormous gummy bears we bought
Because I do
I remember it all
That was the last day
The last day we had an actual conversation
The last day we were the best pair of best friends at our school
Do you remember, because if you do, then maybe there’s
hope?
I failed epically at trying to drink my soda faster than Yerlin
You said my name and laughed just like we were friends again
And that was the moment I realized there might still be hope
Do you remember being asked if we were still friends?
Because I do
I froze every time because I was unsure myself
But I soon realized that the answer was and always is no
Do you remember the story of our friendship?
Because I do.
I remember everything.
Do you remember that day last September?
It was the first day of school
We said our usual “Hi, I missed you, how was your summer?”
Trying to hide the many mosquito bites down our arms and legs
Do you remember that day when I confronted you in the hall?
And asked what it was that I could have possibly done to upset you
Do you remember your response every time I tried to talk to you?
Because I do: “Now is not a good time, now is not a good time”
Do you remember that day you
