VETTING ORIGINAL IDEAS
Unsure if your idea has already been done ? AT HP , IP Management engineers in the most relevant product group decide whether to file with the USPTO based on the level of protection that might
be secured , the commercial value of the invention , and how valuable it will be to the company or market — now or in the future .
It ’ s a collaborative process , explains Atkinson . “ Our lawyers have built up a process of ‘ previewing ’ the ideas , asking the inventor questions , then suggesting where the idea is strong and where it may be strengthened ,” he says .
The USPTO uses a different set of criteria — novelty and “ non-obviousness ”— to determine the viability of a patent . Novelty means no other granted patents exist that are exactly the same as yours . A patent is considered “ nonobvious ” if an expert in the field

can determine that the idea is not obviously comparable to what others have previously invented . The process can be slow : It ’ s typical to wait up to 10 months to four years from when a patent is filed to when it ’ s issued .
FUEL FOR THE INNOVATION ENGINE
A portfolio of broad and diverse patents helps fuel the innovation engine at HP . The protection that patents provide enables the company to differentiate itself in the market , build products that anticipate the needs of its customers , and retain a deep bench of talented inventors . “ Half of inventing is pushing our self-doubts to the side ,” Atkinson says . “ Time will find a way to make ideas possible , but without the idea there is no innovation .”
