Since the start of HP , founders Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard championed what today would be called sustainable impact , inside the company and out . Here in 1994 , Packard operates equipment at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute ( MBARI ), an aquarium and research facility he founded a decade earlier . Initially created to inspire ocean conservation , the aquarium evolved into an ocean science and engineering-focused institution under his leadership . “ I have become addicted to the vision that within the next few years Monterey Bay will become one of the major world-class centers for ocean science ,” Packard said at the time . ¶ Packard ’ s quest hinged on his belief that instruments , not only people , should be sent to study the sea . The result was MBARI ’ s three-pronged strategy embracing the development of remotely operated vehicles ( ROVs ), advanced instrumentation , and computers . Among the outcomes : The strategy helped MBARI discover the deep-sea jellyfish Stellamedusa ventana in 2004 , and it assisted the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in measuring the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill via autonomous underwater vehicles ( AUVs ). ¶ Packard challenged MBARI to pursue bold , pioneering initiatives , saying , “ Take risks . Ask big questions .” The result is a research institute — primarily funded by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation — that continues to be a leader in the development , usage , and sharing of innovative technologies to explore our oceans .
