WHEN HP ’ S DESIGNERS WENT back to the drawing board for the third generation of the HP Elite Dragonfly , they knew it would be launched into an increasingly mobile world where users are grappling with hybrid work and consumers want to patronize socially responsible brands .

The Dragonfly is far from a typical business laptop . It features premium finishes in expressive color choices and , at just a kilogram , punches above its weight . What makes it a business tool to be proud of , however , is that it ’ s the first commercial laptop with components made from ocean-bound plastic . “ When the customer opens the box , they feel like they ’ ve received something special , personal to

them ,” says Chad Paris , Global Senior Design Manager .

Here ’ s a peek behind the process of bringing the Dragonfly to life .

1 . Research , research , and more research : Every twoyear design refresh begins with intensive study . The team pulls together projections about industry trends , including colors , materials , and finishes consumers are clamoring for . They dive into insights from customers and feedback from users , and look at competitive products and advancements in sustainable technologies .

2 . Initial concepts , definition and scope : Designers engage with the R & D product marketing manager for the device to create what ’ s called a concept abstract . This early product definition frames the conceptualization work , which may include sketches , CAD ( computer-aided design ) designs , foam models , and mechanical rigs .

3 . Designs narrowed down and solidified : Product design is narrowed to one or two directions . CAD and graphic plans detailing colors , materials , and finishes are released to the core team to begin technical and cost alignment , culminating in product rendering into digital files .

4 . Physical samples and manufacturer search : Cosmetic models ( realistic resin models with the correct colors and finishes ) are fabricated and reviewed . After cost and design refinement is performed to spec , the product CAD is released for a request for a quote . The program is awarded to an original design manufacturer that can meet requirements .
