3.59 FOCUSING
When a coachee decides to see a coach, they may have a clear
idea about which problem area they want to solve. However,
more often than not, the global situation will be composed of
multiple, often competing problem areas:
-
There may be problems at home,
As well as at work
The built up tensions may also result in physical
problems and feelings of depression
Coahing is as much about priorities and focusing on specific
problem areas in the coachee’s life as about finding solutions for
the coachee.
If the coachee does not know which problem to tackle first, the
coach will have to use purposeful questioning in order to come
to an inventory of problem areas.
Afer summarizing, the coach may then ask the coachee to scale
the various areas in order to determine which are the most
important problems, that require a priority treatment.
Next, they will focus on the problem that the coachee
experiences as the most important, and explore it more in depth.
Sometimes, choosing the right goals to begin with is very
difficult.
Basically, you can choose to work any problem that you feel is
necessary to realize your goals. But when you do not know what
you want to achieve, or in which order you want to work, then
things might get complicated.
A good idea might be to first decide what you want to do with
your life and what large scale goals you want to achieve.
