WHAT

HAPPENS

What actually happens to your body when you exercise? Every part of your body works furiously - but what are they doing?

During physical activity, every inch of your body is working furiously to keep you going. Your cardiovascular system is the body's major power system when it comes to exercise. Your heart and lungs transport oxygen all around your body to keep it functioning correctly.

You require oxygen to function correctly. Your body gains this oxygen through your circulatory system. Your heart consists of four main chambers. Your left atrium, left ventricle and your right atrium, right ventricle. The right side contains oxygen deprived blood and your left side contains oxygen rich blood. Your heart pumps oxygen rich blood all around your body, and brings the oxygen deprived blood back to the heart to be 're-oxygenated' Your heart does this by pumping the oxygen deprived blood to your lungs, your lungs then refresh the blood with a new supply of oxygen and the blood is transferred to the left side of the heart to be pumped around the body.

When you exercise, your body requires more oxygen in a

shorter amount of time. Your body tends to this by breathing more rapidly and the heart beating much faster. this causes oxygen to get to where the body needs it most, and satisfy the oxygen demand.

When you exercise often, your circulatory system is exercised also. Thus, it functions more efficiently for your body. It increases airflow through to your lungs and then to your heart. It improves blood circulation around your body, giving you more energy and making you happier.
