Georgia 8 days/7 nights Suggested Self-Drive Day 1: Atlanta – Athens (116km) Home of the University of Georgia and nestled just below the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. There’s a vibrant, restored Victorian downtown with plenty of impressive gardens and historic architecture to check out. Day 2: Athens – Watkinsville – Madison – Eatonton – Milledgeville – Macon (165km) This journey takes you on the Antebellum Trail, where you will pass through historic communities that escaped General Sherman’s Burning March. If you’re a history buff you may want to spend a couple of days exploring this area. Atlanta Madison Eatonton Macon Athens/Watkinsville Milledgeville GEORGIA Savannah ATLANTIC OCEAN Brunswick/ Golden Isles Day 3: Macon – Savannah (267km) Macon has picturesque architecture and a rich history the best sights are the city itself. Day 4-5: Savannah Known for its natural beauty, magnificent architecture, quaint squares and rich history a great way to explore is by the hop on hop off trolley tour. Highlights worth seeing along the way Visitor Centres – These are a great first port of call in Georgian towns as they have great info and often self-guided tour maps. Day 6: Savannah – Brunswick (185km) On the way check Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation, walk beneath old Oak trees, explore the out-buildings and take a lantern tour of the house you will hear tales of the tragic history of the rice fields. Botanical Garden of Georgia, Athens – Tour the three-story tropical conservatory, miles of nature Trails, and beautiful outdoor gardens. Day 7-8: Golden Isles Drive to Jekyll Island, which has over 30 kilometres of paved trails through beaches, marshes, forests and historic sites if you wanted to stretch the legs and hire a bike. Drive to St. Simons Island and climb to the top of St. Simons Lighthouse for some great views. Elder Mill Covered Bridge, Watkinsville – Visit this lovely 1860s covered bridge overlooking the mill and creek.
