6 TIPS for your Sydney & Me l b ourn e Holiday © Tourism NSW Sydney’s secret beaches Food and fashion markets in Sydney Explore Beyond Sydney With so many beaches in Sydney, it’s easy to find a beautiful sandy spot that’s close to the city. You just have to know where to look. Quiet and secluded beaches are sprinkled around Sydney Harbour as well as along the coast. Sydney markets offer a broad range of goods, from fresh produce to vintage clothing. Less than two hours west from Sydney, the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area is one of Australia’s most spectacular natural parks. Just a short walk or kayak along the coast from Manly is Shelly Beach. The waters off Shelly Beach are popular with snorkellers and divers, while the beach itself is perfect for watching the world go by. By Vaucluse, there are two quiet beaches within Sydney Harbour National Park. Shark Beach in Nielsen Park has a netted swimming area and is great for snorkelling, while Milk Beach, a short walk from the park, is an isolated stretch of coastline that offers its few visitors a dramatic view of Sydney. 2 Weekend markets are held in many neighbourhoods; Eveleigh Farmers’ Markets is held every Saturday at CarriageWorks (near Redfern), and it’s Sydney’s favourite destination for food lovers. Drop by and sample the fresh, organically grown produce and treats such as steamed Chinese dumplings, chocolates and other goodies. Manly’s Corso is where you’ll find the best names in surf and beachwear. Fashionistas should head for Saturday’s Paddington Markets on Oxford Street, and if you’re at Bondi Beach on a Sunday, stroll to the Bondi Markets for a medley of eclectic stalls. You’ll always find something special at the weekend Manly Arts and Crafts Market, or at one-off boutiques on the side streets nearby. Visit Scenic World in Katoomba and enjoy panoramas of the wilderness, waterfalls, valleys and rugged sandstone tablelands by cable car or scenic railway. Only a three hour drive north from Sydney you can experience fantastic food and wine in The Hunter Valley with over 150 vineyards to choose from. Then head to the coast and discover the beachside city of Newcastle before continuing north to the nature playground that is Port Stephens. A mere two hour’s drive south from Sydney you can swim, surf, snorkel or dive around the beautiful beaches of Shellharbour, part of the stunning South Coast region.
