Mangaia Villas
Adjusting to island time and lifestyle is about the biggest problem you can suffer from on Ma’ uke. There are a few shops but no cafés in Ma’ uke. Fresh home-baked bread comes from the village where loaves are baked in a wood-fired oven. The bungalows are cheap and cheerful and hiring a bike or scooter is the best way to get around. The coral roads are deserted and a day spent cycling round the road is a blissful retreat. Every so often a small, sandy beach comes in sight bordered by rocky outcrops.
Atiu is an island of adventure, discovery, culture and art and Atiu Villas provides a relaxing setting to enjoy this natural environment. Six self-contained villas are uniquely made from a variety of native timbers and materials from the island. Each spacious villa has a fully self-contained kitchen, a well-stocked pantry and private veranda to enjoy the expansive views of the lush tropical gardens. Hosts Roger and Kura Malcolm will help organise your tours and activities or provide a home cooked meal in their restaurant. Also on-site is a bar, lawn tennis court, swimming pool, rental vehicles and bicycles.
The oldest island in the world boasting the only accommodation with waterfront villas. Perched ocean side overlooking the beautiful Pacific Ocean, the villas feature large patios, letting you enjoy panoramic views and stunning Mangaia sunsets. Explore the caves along the reef-side or follow the coastal roads and find a secluded beach for yourself. If you can be tempted into more strenuous activity then head inland for some scenic hiking. Here you have all the time in the world to get lost and rediscover your adventurous self.
Caving on Ma’ uke * Bird Watchers Tour, Atiu Caving on Mangaia
One of the best reasons to visit Mauke is to explore the many limestone caves. One we would recommend to visit is the Vai Tango, which lies a short distance from Ngatiarua Village. This cave is fairly large with a beautiful blue pool which is great for swimming and diving. The Motuanga Cave is known as the‘ Cave of 100 Rooms’ and is a great place to do some exploring. It is entered on land but extends towards the sea and under the coral reef that surrounds Mauke – this is definitely one not to be missed. Recommend sturdy walking shoes, insect repellent and water.
A nature lover’ s paradise! While this tour will appeal to bird lovers, anyone wanting to explore the natural wonders of the Cooks will discover that this is a tour not to be missed. Learn about the Rarotongan Flycatcher( Kakerori) Protection Programme and the re-introduction of the Rimatara Lorikeet. Take a walk along an ancient paved path through the native rainforest where you’ ll see the flora and fauna of Atiu in the unspoiled wilderness. Recommend sturdy walking shoes, insect repellent and water.
Not for the faint of heart! Caving on Mangaia is the perfect adventure for those who don’ t mind closed, confined spaces and adrenalin pumping adventure. There are a number of fascinating caves, both burial and others, to be found on the island. The caves wind their way through cliffs of fossilised coral( known as makatea) and are dramatic and beautiful, with stunning stalactite and stalagmite features. This is definitely out of the ordinary and something you should experience during your visit to the Cook Islands. Recommend sturdy walking shoes, insect repellent and water.
