House of Pereira To Walk Under Palm Trees | Page 87

Despite the building ’ s imposing façade it was only one room wide along its central spine . After generous allowance had been made in the design for halls , dining rooms , lounges , communal bathrooms and utility rooms there were only 18 bedrooms , several of which were in the eastern wing ( closest to the camera ) in quarters which appear to have been earmarked for the DH & PG Manager , Mr Karl Hanssen , and his family . The kitchen was out the back in a separate building accessed by a covered pathway . Servants quarters were also at the rear , as were garages and buggy sheds . It appears electricity was not installed until the early 1920s .
