The
next50
From the days when the airlines first opened the global skies to the traveling public , when Marriott Corp . grew out of Hot Shoppes and Hilton International merged with TWA , to today ’ s sensational headlines with Marriott acquiring Starwood and hoteliers learning how to respond to Airbnb , HOTELS has been interpreting the news and helping you make sense of this ever-changing business . In fact , this year marks our 50th anniversary in various incarnations .
We were there in 1970 as Service World International proclaimed “ tomorrow is here ” with Sheraton International ’ s Claude
Editor In Chief
Feninger talking to us about planning a US $ 865 million expansion that had the hotel world buzzing ; in 1983 as Hotels & Restaurants International , when Marriott debuted the first Courtyard for business travelers ; in 1994 , as HOTELS , when Promus and Hyatt Hotels were among the first hotel companies to establish websites ; in 1999 , when the Burj al Arab introduced the world to the Emirates ; in the early 2000s , when 9 / 11 and SARS were dominating the headlines ; soon thereafter , when OTAs like Expedia crept into the vernacular ; and today , as Marriott prepares to absorb Starwood in a deal for the ages that the industry is so anxious to see succeed .
Over the past 50 years , starting with founder Fergus McKeever and continuing through the years with great publishers and editors , HOTELS has evolved and will continue to do so , never satisfied with the status quo .
In keeping with the approach of never resting on our laurels , instead of taking a bow this month and recalling the historic moments during our first 50 years of publishing , this anniversary issue mostly looks ahead . We called on numerous industry leaders to help you prepare for the start of the next 50 years , asking them to write forward-looking commentaries and answer questions about issues and opportunities surrounding management , investment , design , disruptors , F & B and more .
We know our success isn ’ t possible without the newsmakers , the change makers and the history makers that HOTELS has covered from Parsippany and Paris to Pangkor Laut . As we have tried to do since our beginnings , we hope their words and insights inspire you , perhaps take you out of your comfort zone , as well as help you anticipate what ’ s next .
As for us , we vow to continually reinvent what we deliver each month in print as well as daily online . In fact , a new elegant , global and inspirational website is in the works and will launch sometime in 2017 . We hope it acts as a catalyst for our next 50 years .
So , thank you , HOTELS readers , for working with us during the first 50 years , and here ’ s a toast to the industry ’ s success over the next 50 .
