stronger industry , I believe that hotels need to present a more varied and multi-functional service that will stand the test of time , beyond the offering of just rooms to stay in . Hotels could pivot into offering more long-term stays , or prioritize the F & B concept to attract local business , resulting in bars and restaurants that will thrive regardless of international travel restrictions .
For example , one of our current projects in Brussels , Le Commérage Hotel , launched a bar and restaurant Le Conteur , which has been successfully in operation throughout the majority of the pandemic . I know that despite the hotel not being open , Le Conteur has brought in a handsome revenue for the group over the past year .
H : Industry trends you like , don ’ t like ? SZ : Perhaps not a trend , but I like it when sustainability is considered within hospitality design . I think it ’ s crucial to design consciously for the good of our planet and its people . What I dislike is when there is no originality , and designers follow trends monotonously . I prefer when a hotel ’ s design tells its own story , and you can feel its soul .
H : What are the best solutions for increased desire to have more space , more outdoor options ? And what are the constraints , challenges , opportunities , creative solutions in this area ? SZ : When looking at options for outdoor space , I like to try and create an outdoor hub , where guests can come together . Adding an F & B concept here usually does this quite well , and if space permits , a swimming pool , but there can be challenges in permits when designing urban hotels . Even if there is space for an outdoor concept in the garden , the city ’ s municipality might not permit this because of noise complaints from the neighbors . This is just one of the examples of the challenges that could be faced when creating functional outdoor areas .
H : What is the biggest hotel design mistake you see being made right now ? SZ : I see a lot of hotels are now creating kitchenettes in hotel rooms . Because of COVID , they are adding this feature to the rooms as a solution for the decrease in
